VfL Wolfsburg was founded in 1945 as a sports club for employees of the car manufacturer Volkswagen, and has remained closely associated with the company ever since. The club really broke into top-flight German football in the late 1990s, reaching a historic high in 2009 when it won the Bundesliga. Under the leadership of coach Felix Magath and with top scorer Edin Džeko, Wolfsburg played attacking and spectacular football that season. In 2015, the club also won the DFB-Pokal and the German Super Cup.
Wolfsburg plays its home games at the Volkswagen Arena, a modern stadium that opened in 2002 and has a capacity of over 30,000 spectators. The stadium is located near Volkswagen’s headquarters and is the heart of the city’s sports complex. Despite the relatively small fan base compared to traditional top clubs, the company’s involvement and facilities create a stable professional environment.
The city of Wolfsburg is located in the state of Lower Saxony in northern Germany and is one of the youngest cities in the country. It was officially founded in 1938 to house the workers of the Volkswagen factory. Wolfsburg revolves largely around the automotive industry, and VfL Wolfsburg acts as the sporting figurehead of the city. The club is closely linked to the identity and image of both the city and the company.
