In 1965, Fred DeLuca set out to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor. DeLuca was looking for a way to finance his education, so a family friend suggested opening a restaurant serving “submarine” sandwiches.

Pete’s Subway
This friend, Dr. Peter Buck, offered to partner with Fred with a $1,000 loan. A business relationship was born that would change the world of fast food forever.
The first restaurant opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August 1965. They then set out to open 32 restaurants within 10 years. Fred quickly learned the basics of running a business, including the importance of serving a high-quality product, providing excellent customer service, keeping operating costs low, and finding great locations. The lessons Fred learned early on continue to underpin all successful SUBWAY® restaurants worldwide.
