Real Oviedo is a Spanish football club from the city of Oviedo, Asturias. It was founded on March 26, 1926, through the merger of Real Stadium Club Ovetense and Real Club Deportivo Oviedo, with the goal of creating a stronger team for national competition. The club entered Segunda División in 1928–29 and earned promotion to La Liga in 1932–33, becoming the first Asturian side in Spain’s top division. Their debut in La Liga included a remarkable 7–3 win against Barcelona.
Before the Spanish Civil War, Oviedo was considered a title contender, but the conflict interrupted their progress. In the 1960s, the team achieved three third-place finishes, the last in 1962–63. They also played in the UEFA Cup during the 1991–92 season.
Oviedo has had three main stadiums. They started at the Campo de Teatinos (1919), then moved to Buenavista Stadium in 1932, renamed Estadio Carlos Tartiere in 1958 and renovated for the 1982 World Cup. The current Estadio Carlos Tartiere opened in September 2000, seating about 30,500, making it the largest in Asturias. It has hosted Spain national team matches and is the club’s modern home. The club trains at El Requexón, a facility opened in 1969 with multiple pitches and amenities.
