Levante Unión Deportiva, usually called Levante UD, is a Spanish football club based in Valencia. It was founded on September 6, 1909 as Levante Fútbol Club, taking its name from the Spanish word for “the East,” referring to Spain’s eastern coastline. In 1939, after the Spanish Civil War, Levante merged with Gimnástico F.C. to form Levante UD, adopting Gimnástico’s blue and red colors.
The club’s first major success came in 1937 when they won the Copa de la República, a title officially recognized in 2007. Levante reached La Liga for the first time in 1960 but spent many decades moving between divisions, at times falling as far as the fourth tier. Known for its resilience, the club has enjoyed multiple promotions, the most recent being in 2025, its sixth return to the top flight. One of the club’s modern icons is José Luis Morales, nicknamed “El Comandante.”
Levante plays its home games at the Estadi Ciutat de València, located in Valencia’s Orriols neighborhood. Opened on September 9, 1969, the stadium has a capacity of about 26,354 and measures 107 meters by 68 meters. Renovated in 2020 with a new roof, large video screens, and upgraded lighting, it is known for its close, fan-friendly atmosphere. It has also hosted Spain national team matches and served as Villarreal CF’s temporary home in 2022.
The club shares the city with Valencia CF, and their rivalry—known as the Derbi Valenciano—dates back to 1963. While Valencia has historically dominated, Levante’s wins in the fixture are celebrated with great pride by their supporters.
