FC Union Berlin was officially founded in 1966, although the club’s roots go back to the early 20th century. The club has a special history as a football stronghold in the east of Berlin, where it has always distinguished itself through its strong ties to the working class and rebellious identity. After German reunification, Union played in the lower divisions for many years, but was promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2019 and has since surprised with stable performances and even European football.
Union plays its home games at Stadion An der Alten Försterei, which is known as one of the most characterful stadiums in Germany. With a capacity of over 22,000 spectators – mostly standing – the stadium exudes tradition and atmosphere. It is striking that supporters actively participated in the renovation of the stadium in 2008, something that underlines the unique bond between club and fans.
Union Berlin is located in the Köpenick district in the east of Berlin. The club forms a clear contrast to the western Hertha BSC, with which it maintains a city rivalry. Union enjoys great sympathy inside and outside the city because of its authentic character, committed supporters and the fact that it manages to hold its own among the big Bundesliga clubs with limited resources.
