Canada Post (officially: Canada Post Corporation) is the national postal service of Canada. It was established in its current form in 1981, when it took over from the former Post Office Department, and has since been responsible for delivering letters and parcels throughout the country.
Canada Post is a Crown corporation, meaning that it is owned by the Canadian government but operates as an independent commercial company. It plays an important role in connecting urban and remote areas, which in a vast country like Canada is a major logistical challenge.
In addition to letterbox mail, Canada Post also provides parcel delivery, especially since the growth of online shopping. They compete with companies such as FedEx, UPS and Purolator (of which Canada Post is also the majority shareholder).
Canada Post also offers additional services such as post office boxes, registered mail, delivery notifications and international shipping. You will recognize them by their blue, red and white branding and the familiar post offices that can be found throughout Canada.
