Cagliari Calcio is an Italian football club from Cagliari, founded in 1920. The club enjoyed its greatest success in 1970, when it became the first (and so far only) champion of Serie A under the leadership of star striker Gigi Riva. Since then, Cagliari has alternated between periods in Serie A and relegations to lower divisions. The club is known for its fighting spirit and strong ties with the region of Sardinia.
Cagliari temporarily plays its home games at the Unipol Domus, a modern and compact stadium that opened in 2017 as a temporary solution. It has a capacity of 16,500 spectators. There are plans for a completely new stadium in the longer term.
The club is based in Cagliari, the capital of the island and the region of Sardinia. Cagliari Calcio is the pride of the island and represents Sardinia in Italian professional football, with a fanatical and local following.
