Trabzonspor is a football club from Trabzon, founded in 1967 after the merger of several local teams. It quickly became a force in Turkish football, becoming the first team outside of Istanbul to win the Süper Lig. Their breakthrough came in 1976, and they went on to win six league titles in the late 1970s and early 1980s. After decades without a championship, they secured their seventh league title in the 2021–22 season.
The club plays at the Şenol Güneş Sports Complex, a modern stadium with a capacity of over 40,000, opened in 2016 on the western coast of the city. Before that, Trabzonspor’s home was the Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium, which had hosted the team since its early years and was central to its history.
Trabzon itself is a city on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, historically important as a port and trading center. The football club is deeply tied to the city’s identity, representing regional pride against the dominance of Istanbul-based clubs. Trabzonspor’s supporters are known for their passion and loyalty, making them one of the most dedicated fan bases in the country.
