sc Heerenveen is a football club from the Frisian village of Heerenveen, founded in 1920. The club plays in the Abe Lenstra Stadium, named after the legendary Frisian footballer. The stadium has room for around 27,000 spectators and is often packed.
Heerenveen has been a fixture in the Eredivisie for years. The club never won the national title, but did win the KNVB Cup in 2009 and played European football several times. Heerenveen is known for its well-groomed attacking football and developing young talent. Well-known players who broke through at Heerenveen include Ruud van Nistelrooij, Huntelaar, Hakim Ziyech and Bas Dost.
What makes Heerenveen truly unique is its Frisian identity. At home games, you see the Frisian flag everywhere and you often hear the Frisian national anthem. The club actually represents the entire province of Friesland and therefore has a broad and loyal following.
The atmosphere is friendly but fanatical, and the club is known as a well-organised, down-to-earth team where football and culture come together beautifully.
