Ryanair is one of the best-known and largest low-cost airlines in Europe. The airline originates from Ireland and was founded in 1984. Ryanair is famous (and sometimes infamous) for its low ticket prices and no-nonsense style of flying.

The idea is simple: you pay little for your plane ticket, but everything else costs extra. Want to take a suitcase? Pay extra. Want a specific seat? Pay extra. Want to be the first on board? You guessed it. But if you’re traveling with just a backpack and don’t need any frills, you can sometimes fly for a few tens of euros.

Ryanair flies to hundreds of destinations in Europe, North Africa and sometimes even further afield. They mainly use smaller or cheaper airports, a little further away from major cities, because that’s cheaper — and that cost saving is reflected in the ticket price.

The flights are usually short, straightforward and without luxury. Don’t expect free drinks or movies on board. But the flights are often on time, and the airline is super efficient.

Ryanair has built a reputation for “you get what you pay for” — and for many people, that’s just enough.
