Showtime is an American premium television network and streaming service with a rich history dating back to 1976. It originally started as a cable channel that focused on broadcasting movies without interrupting commercials, which was a relatively new concept at the time. In the years that followed, Showtime grew into a major player in the world of pay television, partly thanks to its focus on quirky, daring and often groundbreaking original series.

From the 2000s, Showtime really started to make a name for itself with prestigious drama series and dark comedies such as Dexter, Weeds, Californication and later Homeland and Billions. Where HBO was known for its grand productions, Showtime managed to distinguish itself with more personal stories, often with complex main characters and a sharp edge.
